Twisha Sharma death case update: Mother-in-law Giribala Singh claims her daughter-in-law took abortion pill
The mystery surrounding the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma deepened further on Monday after her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, claimed that her daughter-in-law had consumed abortion pills despite repeated objections from the family.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Giribala Singh said Twisha had informed her husband, Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh, over the phone that she had taken a Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) pill while he was attending court proceedings.
“The first child is very important for any family, but she never allowed us even a moment of happiness. Samarth was in court when Twisha called him and told him that she had taken MTP pills. She took the pills on May 7,” Giribala Singh said, claiming Twisha had repeatedly insisted that she did not want a child.
The 33-year-old MMBS student from Noida, who met Samarth Singh through a dating app in 2024 and married him in December 2025, was found hanging at her marital home in the Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family claims she was murdered due to relentless dowry harassment.
Furthermore, Giribala Singh said Twisha and Samarth had entered into the marriage willingly after meeting each other and developing a relationship. “Twisha had first visited our home herself. Later, her parents came. There were significant differences between our families, but we still agreed to the marriage,” she said.
The retired judge also alleged that Twisha had been under medication and her condition would improve temporarily before deteriorating again. She claimed she personally cared for her daughter-in-law during this period.
Responding to allegations levelled by Twisha’s family, Giribala Singh dismissed claims of influence and favouritism, saying the anticipatory bail granted to her had nothing to do with her judicial background. “Even an ordinary person would have got bail in such circumstances. My son would also get bail,” she said.
Referring to the night Twisha was rushed to hospital, she said Samarth Singh was “running barefoot in AIIMS” and crying continuously after seeing his wife’s condition. She also rejected allegations that the family had any influence within the hospital.
On allegations related to drug use, Giribala Singh claimed Twisha had herself admitted to consuming marijuana heavily. “She herself had admitted to consuming marijuana in large quantities. She repeatedly insisted that she did not want a child. Twisha was undergoing treatment under Dr Satyakant Trivedi. Medicines had been prescribed to her, but she did not take them,” the mother-in-law said.
The retired judge also made remarks against Twisha’s father, claiming his behaviour appeared ‘strange’. “Twisha’s father had accused my son of consuming drugs, but that was false. Later, her father apologised to me. He does not take drugs,” Singh said.
The case is currently under judicial consideration, Singh said, adding that her family too had a long military background. “My husband sacrificed his life for the country. Generations of our family have served in the armed forces,” she said.
Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. According to police, she had met Samarth Singh through a dating app in 2024 and the two married in December 2025.
Following allegations of dowry harassment and murder levelled by Twisha’s family, police formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh have been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to dowry death and harassment.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajnish Kashyap, who heads the SIT, earlier said multiple police teams were deployed to trace Samarth Singh. Police officials said Twisha was taken to hospital by her husband and mother-in-law, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Twisha’s family has alleged that she was murdered by her in-laws. Relatives claimed she remained in contact with them over the phone till around 10 pm on the night of her death and wanted to leave Bhopal and return to Noida.
The SIT is probing several angles in the case, including allegations of dowry harassment, physical assault and possible destruction of evidence after Twisha’s death. A Bhopal court had earlier granted anticipatory bail to retired judge Giribala Singh. However, Samarth Singh’s anticipatory bail plea has been rejected and a hunt is underway to arrest him.
