Parents holds annual ‘wedding’ ritual for deceased son, lover for 22 years in Telangana’s Mahabubabad – Telangana News

A couple in Telangana’s Mahabubabad district has been conducting a symbolic wedding ceremony every year for their deceased son and his beloved for the past 22 years, with the ritual gradually drawing participation from across their village.

Lalu and Sukkamma lost their son Ram Koti in 2003 after he died by suicide when his relationship was opposed by the girl’s family. Around 20 days later, the girl also died by suicide.

The tragedy left the family devastated. According to Sukkamma, her son later appeared in her dream and asked them to build a temple and perform his marriage. The couple subsequently constructed a small shrine within their home and installed idols of Ram Koti and the girl, placing them together.

Since then, the couple has been performing a ceremonial “kalyanam” for the idols every year on the occasion of Sri Rama Navami. The ritual is conducted in a traditional manner, with prayers, offerings and customary wedding practices, treating the pair as Sita and Rama.

Sri Rama Navami is widely believed to be associated with the wedding of Lord Rama and Sita, a ritual observed in temples across Telangana. The couple says their annual ceremony is inspired by this tradition.

Over the years, what began as a private act of remembrance has evolved into a local tradition. Relatives, villagers and people from nearby areas gather each year to witness the ceremony and take part in the prayers.

For the couple, the ritual remains a way to honour their son and a relationship that could not be fulfilled in their lifetime.
