Jharkhand: Man arrested after fiancee’s death, marries her body before cremation in Giridih

The case of a young woman’s suspicious death in Jharkhand’s Giridih district took a bizarre turn when the man arrested for allegedly murdering her, performed symbolic wedding rituals with her body before lighting her funeral pyre. The duo’s families had fixed their marriage nearly four months ago.

After they got engaged, the accused, identified as Manish Murmu, brought his fiance to his home to live with him. The woman’s family alleges that she was forcibly kept at his house on the pretext of marriage until her health deteriorated, and she eventually died.

The FIR in the case was filed on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman’s father. According to reports, Manish and the complainant’s daughter had been living together for the past four months.

However, after the woman’s parents purportedly pressured the groom’s side to get them married, they were informed on Friday morning that their daughter was unwell. Upon hearing this, they arrived at Manish’s home and rushed their daughter to a government hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

After receiving information about the death, police reached the hospital and took custody of the body. However, in a disturbing turn of events following the postmortem, both families refused to claim the body.

Seeing the situation escalate, cops brought the body to the local police station, where it remained overnight. Later, on Saturday, the police took the body to Manish’s village. Strict security arrangements were made in view of the heavy tensions between the two families.

In his complaint to the police, the woman’s father claimed that Manish severely beat up his daughter and forced her to consume poison in order to avoid marrying her. The poisoning led to the woman’s death, her father alleged.

Manish was arrested following the FIR. Later in the same day, the woman’s body was finally brought to his house as a result of extensive efforts to diffuse the situation by the police.

As per his family’s demands, Manish was brought there under police security. He then applied sindoor on his fiance’s hair parting and performed other wedding rituals before completing her funeral.
