GUWAHATI: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday warned that 3,000 people will be arrested in the state over the next 10 days for their involvement in child marriages. He was speaking on the concluding day of the two-day national executive meeting of the BJP Mahila Morcha here.
Sarma said he was waiting for the culmination of the G20 summit to start the second round of crackdown. “Just six months ago, 5,000 people were arrested for child marriages in Assam. It (crackdown) was kept on hold till the completion of the G20 summit. In the next 10 days, another 2,000 to 3,000 men will be arrested.”
He said, “If the social menace persists, daughters of a particular ‘varg’ (social class) will never progress. Some people say we are anti-Muslim, but with our efforts to end (triple) talaaq, polygamy and child marriages, we have done more for Muslims than any Congress government.” He added that while many Islamic countries have already ended “bad practices”, Rahul and Sonia Gandhi oppose moves to abolish those very “bad practices” in India.
The CM also affirmed the Assam government would bring a law by December to ban polygamy in the state.
