UP: Man attacked with sticks after tensions over interfaith marriage in Muzaffarnagar, 1 arrested
Tensions flared in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district on Saturday after some men were caught on camera assaulting a man following a violent clash between two groups from different communities allegedly over an interfaith marriage. One accused has been arrested in connection with the incident.
In 2024, Suraj married Arshi in a local court and she later gave birth to a daughter. However, the bride’s family was unhappy with the marriage and was looking for an opportunity to seek revenge.
On Saturday afternoon, when Suraj was spotted at a local shop in Jasoi village with his friends, two people came from behind and started beating him with sticks. A CCTV camera at a nearby shop, which caught the footage, showed that the assailants came with their faces covered. They attacked Suraj, dragged him to the ground, kept hitting him, before escaping the spot.
Later, police came to the spot and admitted the injured Suraj to the hospital. He was later referred to Meerut for further treatment.
The incident drew the attention of Swami Yashveer Maharaj, the head of the Yoga Sadhna Ashram, who went to see the man at the hospital. He also asked the police to take swift action.
A senior officer from UP Police, Sanjay Kumar Verma, said, “A case has been registered under Section 109 of BNS (attempt to murder). We have already arrested one of the accused, and two of our teams are working on arresting the others.”
