Bihar dowry death: 3 months pregnant woman strangled on first wedding anniversary by in-laws

A 22-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly strangled to death by her in-laws over dowry demands on her wedding anniversary in Bihar’s Gopalganj district, police said. The deceased has been identified as Gudia Devi, wife of Manish Kunwar. According to her family, she was three months pregnant at the time of her death.

Family members alleged that Gudia was being harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry, including demands for a Bullet motorcycle and a gold chain. They claimed the harassment intensified after she became pregnant, and the demands remained unmet.

According to the allegations, Gudia was strangled to death on Friday night, which coincided with her first wedding anniversary. She had married Manish Kunwar on May 8, 2025, and her family said a dowry had already been given according to their financial capacity during the marriage.

IN-LAWS FLEE BEFORE POLICE ARRIVE

After the incident came to light, police reached the house, but the husband and other members of the in-laws’ family had allegedly fled the spot before officers arrived.

Police took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to the district hospital. An investigation has been launched into the case.

POLICE AWAITING COMPLAINT

Speaking on the matter, Gopalganj police officer Rajesh Kumar said police received information about the death of a newly married woman in a village.

“A newly married woman who had been married for around a year was found dead. Information was received that the woman died by hanging. The FSL team has been called, and an investigation is underway. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Further action will be taken after receiving a formal complaint,” the officer said.

Police said they are probing all angles in the case, including the allegations of dowry harassment and murder.
