Woman booked on charges of abetting suicide of husband | Mumbai News
The police in Kalachowki have booked a woman on charges of abetting the suicide of her husband. The woman, who allegedly had an extramarital affair, harassed her husband and threatened to falsely implicate him in a criminal case, forcing him to commit suicide. The man died by jumping from a fifth-floor building in 2020. His family filed a case in the court that recently directed the police to lodge an FIR against the woman and three of her relatives.
According to the police, the accused woman, Bhavnagar resident Poonam Dinesh Kataria, 28, a school teacher by profession, got engaged to Rahul Vishram Parmar, 25, a resident of Kalachowki in 2019. Rahul was working with a food delivery company while his father is a BMC employee.
After the engagement, while talking to Rahul over the phone, Poonam would often get irritated and would not talk to him properly, prompting him to call off the engagement.
When Rahul’s family conveyed their decision to Poonam’s family, they threatened to falsely implicate them in a dowry case if they called off the marriage and also allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh. Scared, Rahul and his family changed their decision, Rahul’s father Vishram Parmar stated in his police complaint.
On January 20, 2020, Rahul and Poonam got married in Bhavnagar. But after a week, Rahul informed his family that Poonam was not allowing him to touch her, and she also told him that her family had forcefully tied her knot with him. She would frequently talk to the headmaster of a school in Gujarat and would also not talk properly with her in-laws.
In March, Rahul allegedly caught Poonam talking to her alleged boyfriend, Bhavesh Bhava, and when she was confronted in front of family members, she admitted that she was having an affair with Bhava and that she did not want to stay with Rahul anymore. After this, her family and relatives took her back to Gujarat, the police complaint said.
Poonam’s relatives would often call Rahul and threaten him with dire consequences if he did not take Poonam back to his home. Rahul was under mental stress, his father told the police.
“After a few days, Rahul’s family went to Gujarat, and after making some enquiries, they found out that Poonam was allegedly having an affair with Bhava even before marriage. Just before the marriage, she eloped with him but returned after a week. Her family, however, allegedly concealed this from Rahul’s family and cheated them. Rahul was under tremendous mental stress due to this,” Rahul’s father stated.
Later, Poonam filed a dowry harassment case against Rahul and his family members, dragging Rahul towards depression.
In December 2020, Poonam’s relatives Deepak Bagadiya, Pankaj Kataria, and Kishor Parmar allegedly harassed Rahul in Arthur Road area and threatened him, saying they would get his entire family behind bars.
“Rahul was under mental pressure due to this, and with tears in his eyes, he would say that he would commit suicide.
On December 18, 2020 when Poonam’s relatives were allegedly harassing him, he went to the terrace of our building and allegedly jumped to death from the fifth floor,” Rahul’s father told police.

After a few days, when Rahul’s father searched his room, he found a verified divorce petition in which Rahul, in detail, mentioned how Poonam and her relatives cheated on him, defrauded him of gold jewelleries, threatened and mentally harassed him. He had also mentioned that Poonam had admitted her extramarital affair with Bhava in writing and also through a video, the FIR alleged.
After many months, Rahul’s father approached a city court with these proofs and filed a complaint. After prima facie seeing a cognizable offence, the court recently directed the Kalachowki police to register a case.
The police on Saturday booked Poonam and her relatives Deepak Bagadiya, Pankaj Kataria, and Kishor Parmar under sections 120-B, 306, 379, 380, 406, 415, 420, 503, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and are further investigating the matter.
