To counter Oppn, Yogi reaches out to women via mahila sammelans | Lucknow News
With the Opposition targeting the BJP government over the delayed implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Samajwadi Party announcing 20% quota for women candidates in the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the ruling party in the state is using “Nari Shakti Vandan Mahila Sammelans” to reach out to the fair sex.
In these conventions, the party is informing people about the “steps taken for women’s empowerment” in the past six-and-a-half years of their government in the state, particularly about assuring 20% reservation to women in the police force.
Even as his Cabinet colleagues are addressing such ‘sammelans’, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself is leaving no stone unturned as he will be addressing six conventions — one each in the party’s six organisational zones. Having already addressed two conventions — one in Bulandshahr on October 17 and another in Hathras district on Thursday — the CM will address such gatherings in Auraiya and Mirzapur districts on October 28 and 30, respectively.
Then he will address a ‘sammelan’ in Hardoi district of central UP on November 2 and one in Ballia district the next day.
At these conventions, he is focusing on what his government has done for women’s empowerment in the past six-and-a-half years apart from reminding the crowd about the Centre’s schemes on this front.
In his speeches, he claims to have increased women’s participation in the workforce in the state from 10,000 in 2017 to 40,000 personnel in 2023 and that free ration was provided to 15 crore families during the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.
He is also talking about providing Rs 15,000 each to girl children in phases, which he has announced to increase to Rs 25,000 from the next financial year.
Then he highlights an assistance of Rs 51,000 each for the marriage of girls under the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojna and the government’s decision to promote women’s self-help groups across the state.

“In the past six-and-a-half years, people have seen a changing scenario in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Police is the biggest example of women’s participation in the development schemes. Till 2017, there were just 10,000 women personnel in the police force but the number has increased to 40,000 after the “double-engine government” came to power in the state,” he says.
On this, he claims that his government has ensured 20 per cent reservation to women in appointments made in the police force.
“These numbers show that effective steps have been taken for women’s empowerment in the state. As much as poor, farmers and youth are the government’s priority, women have also become part of our agenda,” he adds.
