The incident took place near the Punjab Police Headquarters in Sector 9, with the police so far having booked at least four people of the woman’s family for allegedly having a hand in getting her kidnapped.
The police have registered a case in the incident on the basis of a statement provided by the woman’s husband who is a taxi driver who works in Chandigarh — and have launched a hunt for the missing person.
In his statement to the police, the husband has said, “I am a native of Malerkotla in Punjab. My wife is also from Malerkotla and we have known each other for a long time. On Friday, my wife and I, along with our advocate, were in an autorickshaw headed towards the high court, when a white coloured car intercepted us. My wife’s brother, Akashdeep Singh, along with three others, forcefully took dragged her out of the auto and put her in the car before speeding away from the spot. The men also snatched my bag containing my cell phone, marriage certificate, and some documents.”
A police officer involved in the investigation of the case said, “The couple had tied the knot against the wishes of their families. A police team visited the gurdwara in Kharar where the sewadars confirmed that the couple had indeed tied the knot there on October 9.”
The Station House Officer of Police Station 3, Inspector Jai Parkash Singh, said, “Efforts are being made to trace the bride and her family members. Raids are being conducted at Malerkotla. The woman will be traced shortly and the culprits will be arrested.”
