Marriage proposal spurned, man bludgeons woman to death in Malviya Nagar park | Delhi News
A 22-year-old woman was beaten to death with an iron rod in broad daylight, allegedly by a man whose marriage proposal her family had recently turned down, inside a park in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Friday afternoon, police said.
DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary said police received a PCR call regarding a murder at the Vijay Mandal Park near Aurobindo College and a woman was found lying on the ground. A chair, an iron rod and a bag were found next to her, police said. Police arrested the accused, identified as Irfan, 28, from his house in Sangam Vihar, around 7- 8 km from where the deceased, Nargis, lived with her family. She used to attend stenography coaching in Malviya Nagar, police said.
Police said the mothers of victim and the accused happen to be sisters. “The deceased and the accused were said to be in a relationship earlier… there were even talks of marriage but the woman’s parents, and subsequently Nargis declined the proposal…this infuriated the accused,” said an officer.
An investigator, requesting anonymity, said, “The accused started a recce three days back and knew that Nargis travels through the park to go towards her coaching centre …he bought an iron rod from a market and placed it inside his bag which he was carrying at the time of the incident.”

Irfan had been working as a delivery agent, police said. “He had written entrance tests to join the Indian Army last year, in which he had failed… he was also preparing for civil services exams,” said the officer.
Sources said Irfan had come on his scooter. He entered through a back entry gate, instead of the main entrance. “Prima facie from the wounds on the victim’s head and face, it seems he beat her up with the road at least three to four times,” said another officer.
At the incident spot, security incharge and one of the first responders, Surendra Kumar, said, “A few people strolling at the park came running towards me and said a girl is lying dead near a chair, nearly 100 metres from the park’s main gate…my supervisor and I rushed to the spot but the accused had fled by then.”
